Buyer guide

Evaluate a heavy fabrication partner.

Compare how a shop will make, check and deliver the work—not only its quoted price.

Fabrication work on the Naxos shop floor

Before you compare quotes

Start with the drawing and the actual scope.

A low number is difficult to compare if the offers cover different materials, welds, inspection, finishing or delivery. Give each supplier the same revision and ask them to state their assumptions and exclusions.

Six checks

What to ask the fabricator.

These questions work for equipment frames, skids, industrial assemblies and fabricated structures. Adapt them to the critical features on your drawing.

01 / Drawings

How is the scope reviewed?

Confirm drawing revision, quantities, material grade and any missing details before accepting the quote.

02 / Fabrication

What can be completed in-house?

Discuss cutting, fit-up, welding, handling and any machining or outside process that the job requires.

03 / Welding

What are the weld requirements?

Identify weld sizes, process requirements, access constraints and whether procedure or welder records are required.

04 / Inspection

Which checks will be recorded?

Agree on dimensions, visual inspection, test or document hold points, and who signs off before dispatch.

05 / Finish

What leaves the workshop?

Clarify surface preparation, coating, touch-up, marking and packing rather than assuming “finished” means the same thing to everyone.

06 / Delivery

How will it be moved?

Check lifting points, loading, transport size, delivery location and site unloading responsibility.

Prepare the enquiry

Send enough detail to get a useful answer.

  • Drawings and revisionShare a PDF or CAD file, plus the current revision and any related BOQ.
  • Material and quantityState grade, thickness or section, required quantity and whether material is supplied by you.
  • Critical requirementsMark dimensions, welds, inspection, finish and documents that cannot be assumed.
  • DeliveryInclude destination, required date and any loading or transport constraints.
